Automation anxiety tends to swing between two extremes — "this won't affect me" and "everything is about to be replaced." Neither is a useful starting point for actual career decisions.

Separate the Task From the Role

Most jobs are a bundle of tasks, and automation usually eats specific tasks within a role long before it eats the whole role. A data entry clerk whose typing work gets automated but who also handles vendor coordination and exception-handling has a very different outlook than one who only types. Look at your own role this way — which pieces are repetitive and rule-based, and which require judgment, context, or a relationship?

The Skills That Age Well

Across most functions, the skills that hold up are the ones automation is still bad at: reading a room in a negotiation, catching an unusual edge case a model wasn't trained for, translating a vague business need into a specific request, and taking accountability when something goes wrong. These aren't abstract "soft skills" — they're specific, practiceable capabilities worth deliberately building.

Learn the Tools That Are Changing Your Function

If generative AI tools are showing up in your field — content drafting, code assistance, data analysis, customer support — becoming genuinely fluent with them (not just aware of them) is a faster path to staying relevant than trying to out-compete them at the task they're good at. The people whose roles are safest right now are often the ones directing the tools, not avoiding them.

Don't Wait for Your Company to Retrain You

Most companies talk about upskilling more than they actually fund it. Free and low-cost options — Coursera, YouTube courses from credible practitioners, vendor-run certifications (AWS, Google, Microsoft all offer free tiers) — are enough to build a real skill if you're consistent. Waiting for a formal program that may never come is the slower path.

Revisit This Every Year, Not Once

What's automatable in your function will keep shifting. A once-a-year honest look at which of your tasks have gotten easier to automate, and which of your skills have gotten more valuable, is a habit worth keeping rather than a one-time exercise.
