India's renewable energy capacity has grown substantially over the past decade, driven by national targets and falling technology costs — but headline capacity growth numbers don't always translate cleanly into "lots of open jobs in my city." It's worth understanding where the actual roles concentrate.
Solar and wind project development requires electrical, mechanical, and civil engineers for design, installation, and ongoing operations and maintenance — and unlike the design phase, which concentrates in a few hub cities, O&M roles are distributed across the actual project sites, often in smaller towns and rural areas near solar parks and wind farms.
Developing a renewable energy project from land acquisition through regulatory approval to construction requires project managers who understand both the technical and regulatory sides — a genuinely scarce combination that commands strong compensation relative to years of experience required.
Beyond the physical build-out, renewable energy financing (project finance, green bonds), regulatory advisory, and carbon credit/ESG-adjacent roles have grown as a distinct professional niche, typically concentrated in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru where policy and finance functions cluster.
Beyond general job portals, the career pages of major renewable energy developers (Adani Green, ReNew Power, Tata Power Renewables, and others) and industry-specific platforms tend to surface openings faster than general search, since this remains a specialized enough field that postings don't always circulate widely on general portals.
A base engineering or finance degree combined with a specific renewable energy certification (project management, solar PV design, or similar short courses, several offered free or low-cost by government skill-development bodies) is generally a faster path in than trying to enter with only a generic engineering background and no sector-specific credential.
