How to Run an Efficient Job Search

By Job Trends India Team

Sending resumes to every posting you find is the least efficient version of a job search. Here's how to actually improve your odds.

A Large Share of Roles Are Filled Before They're Ever Publicly Posted

Many positions are filled through internal referrals or direct outreach before a public listing goes up, or without a public listing at all. Relying solely on job boards means missing a meaningful portion of the actual opportunities available.

Informational Interviews Are Underused and Effective

A short, low-pressure conversation with someone in a role or company you're interested in — not asking for a job, just asking for their perspective — builds a real relationship and frequently surfaces leads that never appear on a job board. Most people are more willing to have this kind of conversation than job seekers assume.

Target Companies Directly, Not Just Roles

Identifying 15-20 companies you'd genuinely want to work for, and following their hiring activity and employees directly, is often more productive than scrolling through hundreds of generic postings. A focused list lets you go deeper on each application and each relationship.

Referrals Change Your Odds Significantly

An internal referral moves your application past the initial resume screen in a way a cold application often doesn't. Before applying cold to a company you're targeting, check whether anyone in your network has a connection there worth asking for an introduction.

Niche and Industry-Specific Boards Have Less Competition

Mainstream job boards see enormous application volume for every posting. Industry-specific groups, niche job boards, and professional association listings often have far less competition for genuinely relevant roles.

Track Everything So You Can Actually Learn From the Data

Which channels are producing responses — referrals, direct applications, a specific job board — becomes visible only if you're tracking it. Without this, it's easy to keep pouring effort into the least effective channel simply because it's the most familiar one.

Quality of Application Beats Volume, Past a Point

Twenty tailored, well-researched applications to roles you're genuinely a fit for will usually outperform a hundred generic ones. Once you're applying broadly enough to have real signal on what's working, shift effort toward depth rather than continuing to increase volume.
