Remote work has changed a lot about how companies think about pay, but location hasn't stopped mattering entirely. Here's how it actually plays out in India.
Despite the growth of remote work, many Indian companies still set salary bands partly based on the cost of living in a candidate's location — a role based in Bengaluru or Mumbai often carries a different pay band than the same role in a smaller city, even for fully remote positions.
A minority of companies, particularly some tech-forward and global remote-first organizations, now pay the same rate for a role regardless of where the employee is based. This remains the exception rather than the norm in the Indian market as of now, though it's worth specifically asking about during salary discussions for a remote role.
A common misconception among candidates in smaller cities is that a remote role automatically pays metro-city rates. In practice, many companies still peg remote salaries to the employee's actual location — confirm this explicitly rather than assuming it during negotiation.
A lower salary in a lower-cost city can represent similar or better real purchasing power than a higher salary in an expensive metro, once housing and daily costs are factored in. Comparing raw salary numbers across cities without this context can be misleading.
If you're negotiating a remote role and based somewhere with lower living costs, framing your ask around your actual market value and the specific skills you bring — not apologizing for a lower cost of living — tends to produce a better outcome than assuming you should accept a lower offer by default.
A hybrid role that requires occasional office presence in an expensive city, while paying based on a lower-cost home location, is worth scrutinizing closely — factor in the real cost and time of periodic travel or relocation into your evaluation of the offer.
Rather than guessing, a direct question — "how does location factor into how this role is compensated" — during the interview process gets you a clear answer and avoids a mismatched expectation surfacing only after an offer is made.
