Having a LinkedIn profile and using LinkedIn for a job search are two different things. Most people do the first and wonder why nothing happens. Here's what actually moves the needle.
LinkedIn's default headline is your current designation. Replace it with what you actually do and what you're looking for: "Backend Engineer (Java/Spring) — 5 yrs, open to senior roles in fintech." Recruiters search by keyword, and your headline is one of the most heavily weighted fields in that search.
A clear, recent, professionally-dressed headshot measurably increases profile views. You don't need a studio shoot — good lighting and a plain background from a phone camera is enough. Group photos, filters, and casual snapshots hurt more than people expect.
Skip "Results-driven professional with X years of experience." Every profile says this; it means nothing. Instead, name the actual problems you solve and one or two concrete outcomes, in your own voice.
Under each role, don't list responsibilities — list what changed because you were there. "Reduced support ticket resolution time by 30% by restructuring the escalation process" beats "Handled customer support operations" every time.
Instead of "Could you write me a recommendation," ask a former manager to specifically mention a project you both worked on. Specific recommendations read as credible; generic ones read as a favor.
Skills endorsements matter less for credibility and more for LinkedIn's own search ranking — endorsed skills surface higher when recruiters filter candidates. Ask 3-4 former colleagues to endorse the 5 skills you most want to be found for.
Most people trying to "build a personal brand" jump straight to posting content, which is intimidating and often ignored when you have few followers. Commenting thoughtfully on posts by people in your target companies or industry is lower-effort and puts your name in front of the right people faster.
A blank connection request to a recruiter gets ignored or ignored-then-deleted. One line — who you are and why you're reaching out — dramatically improves acceptance rates and gets you remembered.
A profile that hasn't been touched in two years signals inactivity to LinkedIn's algorithm, which quietly deprioritizes it in recruiter search. Updating even small things — a new certification, a project — keeps you visible.
The recruiter-only version of "Open to Work" (visible to recruiters, not your current employer) is safer than most people realize and puts you directly in LinkedIn Recruiter search results. If you're job searching quietly, this is the setting to use.
LinkedIn works best alongside a direct job search, not instead of one — browse current openings on Job Trends India with real, verified company details and see what other candidates thought of working there before you apply.
